Mental illness affects many American families, and addressing this issue is vital to promoting the health of our communities. To raise awareness about mental health, President Obama has called for an honest, national conversation about mental health.

In answer to President Obama’s call for a national dialogue on mental health, Mayor Vincent C. Gray will host a citywide discussion on mental health on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center. Creating Community Solutions – D.C. will engage hundreds of District residents in small-group conversations to develop strategies to reduce the stigma associated with, and increase openness to, mental-health care.

Creating Community Solutions is an important part of the National Dialogue. It will give Americans a chance to learn more about mental health issues - from each other and from research. Participants will discuss the importance of mental health in their communities, identify the key challenges that youth in particular face, and recommend strategies that meet the unique needs of young people.

The priorities developed in Creating Community Solutions – D.C. will become the central focus of a community-wide action plan that will be developed by more than two dozen community and organizational representatives from across the government, private, and non-profit sectors.
